Ryan began playing hockey at the age of 3. His family moved to the Dallas area when he was 10 and he continued to play hockey around the area for DJHA, Jr. Stars, and the Dallas Ice Hawks Midget AA. Ryan played high school hockey for Plano East Varsity. During his time with Plano East the team won City Championships and participated in the State Championship. After high school Ryan played Jr hockey for the Portland Pioneers, Kootenai Colts, and the Puget Sound Tomahawks in the NORPAC league. Most recently Ryan played Division II in the ACHA for the Utah State Aggies. While in Utah Ryan was involved in running youth hockey camps
